- ESP has a larger buffer/stack and can handle 230K data rates.
- The 16550 cards are limited <?> to 115.2K and have a smaller stack.
-
- Since the Courier (and most modems) won't communicate faster than 115.2K,
- and since data generally can't be compressed anywhere near that anyway
- (I know I'll get flamed for saying that, but I'm talking real-world
- data, much of which will be already compressed, not .cdr files or text
- files half-filled with blanks) I would go with the 16550 card.
-
- My newer machines come with 16550's (or equivalents), but I've used the
- STB dual 16550 card in 486/66's, and been able to use 115.2K in both
- DOS and Windows without losing characters. I wouldn't spend the extra
- for the Hayes card, but it's your choice.
